RATIONALE AND METHODS FOR COMPILING AN ELECTRONIC HISTORICAL-GEOGRAPHICAL ATLAS OF THE ANCIENT WATERWAYS OF RUSSIA
Abstract
The electronic historical-geographical atlas of cultural and historical landscapes of ancient waterways is a combination of a traditional atlas and a geographic information system (GIS). The atlas intends to include electronic, accessible via the Internet, integrated maps of historical waterways, interactive three-dimensional models of their most important sections, with identified natural and hydraulic monuments, historical and cultural objects, historic monuments and sites, including descriptions of the topographic features, natural and cultural-historical landscapes and an assessment of the present-day state of the mentioned objects. To combine, save, catalog and visualize a significant amount of information about the described waterways, the sitemap of http://waterways.ru/ is used. The atlas consists of three main blocks: natural, historical-economic, application (educational), each of which contains cartographic, verbal, and graphic information at all three hierarchical levels. The long and intensive operation of these important communication routes caused significant anthropogenic impact and, consequently, led to the anthropogenic transformation of the surrounding landscapes. An important information-and-reference part of the atlas is made up of cultural-historical landscapes of the waterways, natural, anthropogenic, and cultural-historical complexes that represent the structure of these landscapes. The unified integrated database of the electronic atlas will allow to improve measures for the registration, preservation, and intelligent use of the natural and cultural heritage of the historical waterways.
