Abstract

Geotechnical monitoring aspects of construction activities in congested urban environment are discussed. Successful application of express methods, enabling mobile equipment use for soil tests is described. Case histories of such applications in Moscow historical downtown are given. Data, obtained by such monitoring, is analyzed, and a conclusion is drawn on the necessity to apply sparing technologies when construction operations are carried out in the vicinity of buildings in service. Development and redevelopment of major historical cities such as Moscow, where the number of stories and the urban area are limited, has recently been accompanied by underground space development. Soil excavation, urban development, including that of underground, affect the geological environment and, therefore, tells upon adjacent buildings. The regional regulations advice to conduct geotechnical monitoring during the whole construction period and for at least one year after its completion. Generally, geotechnical monitoring includes a series of activities to evaluate refurbished and adjacent buildings behavior as well as identification of potential changes in soils and in adjacent soil massif in the course of construction process. The obtained information is to ensure the development of measures for preventing and mitigating potential implications of construction operations and, hence, to maintain the integrity of existing structures within the new construction influence zone.
