MANAGING INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES AS A MEANS OF ACHIEVING LAND DEGRADATION NEUTRALITY IN ROMANIA
Abstract
Based on the common understanding upon the importance of co-operation between countries and institutions in establishing functional early warning systems and sharing the knowledge already existing on forest invasive alien species (IAS) and land degradation, it is crucial to find new approaches to address these sustainability challenges. At global level, we are witnessing a shift in the economic, political and social context towards more integrative approaches in line with Agenda 2030. In this respect, Romania adapted its legislation in order to meet the international development in the environmental protection and sustainability areas. Identifying the most suitable means of actions can have a significant contribution to the social equity and to the promotion of new sustainable approaches like the one of land degradation neutrality (LDN). Taking into consideration the need to diminish the aggressive spread of the IAS and the international commitments towards the new concept of LDN, the authors would like to emphasize that a sustainable solution would be to value the IAS economical potential. Based on ongoing research, two national lists were drafted, regarding the invasive and potentially invasive alien tree species found in protected forests.
