CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF THE FLOOD MANIFESTED ON FEBRUARY 6, 2012 ON THE MARITSA RIVER NEAR THE TOWN OF SVILENGRAD (CASE STUDY OF BULGARIA)
Abstract
The purpose of the publication is to clarify the flood causes and consequences that occurred on 06.02.2012 on the Maritsa River near the town of Svilengrad. For this purpose, a survey of literature sources and technical documentation was carried out to clarify the main natural-geographical and anthropogenic factors for the formation of high waters of the Maritsa River and the manifestation of the flood in town Svilengrad. Based on this, as well as on field work, information for the creation of GIS databases for the disaster / flood and the negative consequences of its occurrence was collected. The result of the study is mainly related to clarifying the flood causes and negative consequences for the population, the economy and the environment. The topic proposed for research is particularly relevant, taking into account climate change and the growing likelihood of occurrence of a similar flood in the future. Studying the flood is especially important. This will allow assessment of the potential risk of flooding of the same scale, as well as to lessons-learned that led to its occurrence. It is also important that the results of the study be promoted among the population of Svilengrad, which will increase its awareness and readiness for an adequate response at the time of the event of a disaster/flood in the future. The results of the study are the basis for the formulation of adequate measures to flood risk reduction in this part of the Maritsa River.
