FAILURE OF A DN 600 GRAVELITE STRENGTHENED ROAD CULVERT IN THE ROAD EMBANKMENT

Abstract

The article presents a failure of an existing road culvert located in the provincial road embankment that was built on an organic soil. Recommended road designing methods require the involvement of high volume of native soils. The problem occurs when there are only weak soils in the area. The particular group of soils consist of organic soils. Even in the case of the organic soils, there are several different methods for safe settlement of the designed road surface. In current case in order to reduce the settlement, the designer involved the gravelite aggregate to strengthen the embankment. However, after half a year, there were visible signs of settlement in the culvert area. After the geodetic inspection it was stated that the sewage well settled on the side of the organic soil. The video inspection showed burst of the DN 600 pipe. The pipe with the stiffness of SN 10 was made with polyester-resin reinforced with fiberglass (GRP). In the paper author shows that the cause of the culvert failure was the construction work conducted in the neighboring road. The work was performed without necessary permits and permissions from road authorities and contrary to design specifications.
