PECULIARITIES OF HEAVY METALS DISTRIBUTION IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND CHALLENGES OF MODERN INDUSTRIAL URBAN AGGLOMERATIONS
Abstract
Environmental pollution by technogenic chemical elements is a significant problem of modern industrial cities. To determine remediation measures it is necessary to have information on heavy metal pollution of all industrial and public facilities of cities, adjacent territories, and soils in parks and city lawns. Content of chemical elements in soil and their concentrations are in close genetic relationship with the lithosphere (bedrock), atmosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere and show constant exchange of matter and energy with living and non-living nature. Soil buffering capacity, i.e. ability to resist elemental pollutants is not homogeneous either what is closely related primarily to soil pH and cation exchange processes occurring in soils. Pollution in densely populated areas is much more intense as industrial sources of pollution are added by municipal and domestic sources of pollution what becomes more dangerous by the day as the process of urbanization on Earth is gaining momentum. Natural areas with significantly increased concentrations of various chemical elements are identified on the Earth. Goal of the study was to determine impact of industrial enterprises located in Poti urban agglomeration area on soil cover of city. This is even more relevant considering that Poti and its environs are located in extreme western part of Kolkheti Plain at 1-3 m asl. Climate is humid subtropical and annual precipitation exceeds 2000 mm. Low-fertile seaside alluvial soils are developed here characterized by high filtration what causes intensive humus washing and thus low fertility of soils.
