OPTIMISATION OF WASTE COMBUSTION PROCESSES MANAGEMENT - PERSPECTIVES AND THREATS
Abstract
Countries that largely base their production of electricity and thermal on coal, are exposed to a significant burden of the environment, mainly through the emission of harmful substances into the environment, including the production of large quantities of solid waste: including fly ashes, slags, ash, slag mixes etc. However, the waste generated in combustion processes does not have to be a burden to the environment. Due to the changes in legal regulations they may become a by-product (i.e. Coal Combustion Products, CCPs); this category allows for them to be used as a raw material in other processes/industries. Nowadays, they are successfully used in building construction, road engineering, production of building materials, and underground mining. The development of CCPs has also reached newer directions, such as agriculture and nanotechnology. The search for new possibilities for the use of CCPs is due to not only environmental but also economical concerns. The implemented legislative changes are not enough to allow full and rational use of CCPs, however they are an important step to a circular economy and energy sector without waste. Optimization of waste combustion processes management, however, will not be possible without the extensive diagnosis of the problem: in terms of the legal regulations and factors such as social, economic, technological, ecological and logistics indicators, as well as of the quality of CCPs produced in the combustion processes. This paper is an introduction to take measures for the rationalization of the use of raw material potential of waste from combustion processes, as well as an attempt to identify a number of factors supporting and threatening these actions. Only a comprehensive approach to the problem will enable the effective use of raw material potential of CCPs and to minimize the impact of the factors which threaten this use. The use of full potential of CCPs, however, will not be possible without a wide assessment of actual state and inventory of the technological base. The paper presents selected directions of the development of CCPs. There are also identified the important factors determining the use of CCPs and the possibility of supporting them through the methods used in production engineering.
