Abstract

As direct consequence of the urban development, waste management is a multidimensional issue that incorporates political, institutional, social, environmental, and economic aspects. The paper aims to analize the efficiency of waste management strategy, implemented in the town of Boto?ani. It is also considering, the populationпїЅs level of education and perception, regarding selective collection and the quality of public Sanitation Services. Boto?ani is a second rank town (the most important in Boto?ani county), located in the northeast of Romania (Moldavia Region), with a 40,1 kmпїЅ aria and 106.847 inhabitants. By rendering the statistical data, a thoroughly study of various bibliographical sources but also by aplication of a questionnaire, one needed to sumarize the population perception of municipality waste management policies and the joint action municipality пїЅ population, in dealing with the challenge of waste disposal. It can be noted, that Botosani is lacking of waste management in two ways: institutional and social-civic. From an institutional perspective, the present research, refers to the delay of opening a waste ecological landfill, completed in 2017, and to a deficient equipping of the town with specialized containers for selective collection, treating , exploitation or compost for urban waste. In what concerns the social-civic component, after applying the questionnaires, it seems that the local population is insufficiently educated on the selective pre-collection of household waste. In conclusion, the study offers sugestions on improving waste management policy taking into account the indicator of waste generation, estimated to 256 kg/ inhabitant/year, that seems to have an increasing tendency. In addition to this, the implementation of European Committee instructions was done partially. The current situation reveals the need, for municipality, to organize several education campaign for population and to improve waste collection infrastructure.
