Abstract

This paper describes possibilities to use numerical models as significant aid in proposal of slope stabilization in Quarry. More accurately the proposal for excavation way of first soil overburden cut, which is mixed up with rock mass, to stabilize the slope. That is real case study which was performed for greywacke quarry situated in Eastern Bohemia. Since 2005 a small instability symptoms are observed on eastern general slope of quarry. Based on this fact the slope stability investigation started in detail one year later. Common investigative methods were used for this purpose. Responsible investigation team calculated a lot of factors of safety (FoS) by using common methods (e.g. Bishop) in order to propose safest and most appropriate way for deposit excavation. In situ observation of critical area of the slope was performed on daily base. In 2012 the investigation team, included members from Technical University of Ostrava, classified the rock mass by using Rockfall Hazard Rating (RHR) and Slope Mass Rating (SMR). Some corrective actions were applied according results from mentioned investigation. Despite these measures, the significant part of eastern slope slid and next mining activities are limited untill today. That is the reason for actual comprehensive investigation. During last period the two-dimensional numerical model of critical slope before slip was created and factor of safety was calculated retrospectively. Calculation was done by two geotechnical softwares пїЅ Midas GTS and Fine GEO 5 FEM because of the possibility of comparison. The results shows us that they respond with other common calculation. Therefore, both of the softwares were fully implemented to other investigation methods. The goal of this paper is to introduce numerical modeling as a powerfull tool for slope stability analysis on this real example. The paper describes slope stability analysis by using geotechnical softwares mentioned above in detail, their limits occured during the analysis as well as other relevant issues. The geotechnical softwares will be used during investigation and, first of all, during proposal process of slope stabilization.
