DIGITAL MODLING OF FLOODS
Abstract
Highly accurate digital terrain model (DTM) is nowadays considered to be a top-level tool for modeling processes on earth surface. Particularly important is its application in the regions endangered by natural disasters – especially floods. Occurrence of extreme flowage – floods in the past few years has not only intensified, but began to interfere in to regions, that up till now didn´t experienced floods. Each year brings greater damage on properties and infrastructure. Potential size of inundated area, progress and duration of flood wave and depth of water in flooded territory, all these aspects could be modeled through DMR and with the help of suitable software tools of GIS environment. Among the most commonly used tools belong 1D, 2D and 3D mathematical models, implemented using different appropriate software tools. It is also appropriate to mention MIKE 11, MIKE21, HYDROCHECK, HEC2, HEC-RAS and many others. Their selection depends on a result, we are trying to achieve with specific model. Geographic information system (GIS) is the most suitable tool for processing, evidence, analysis and presentation of any kind of data. Between initial source materials and GIS exists a correlative link, which means that input data are entered into GIS and simultaneously the GIS can backwardly affect the content of a source data.
