THE EVOLUTION OF TRANSYLVANIAN ETHNIC GROUPS FROM 1869 TO PRESENT REFLECTED IN THEMATIC MAPS
Abstract
Transylvania is one of the historical provinces of Romania, located within the central part of the country. This region is characterised by a marked ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious diversity. The main ethnic groups forming the population of Transylvania are Romanians, Hungarians, Roma, Saxons, Swabians, Armenians, Jews and Ukrainians. Over time, the structure of TransylvaniaпїЅs population varied significantly in terms of ethnicity due to its political and economic conditions. The evolution in population structure was outlined in this article through figures, diagrams and maps. Thematic maps were designed using the ArcMap application due to its numerous strengths, including the creation of pie charts and bar/column chart maps for displaying population ethnicity. Choropleth maps were also created for representing the percentages of population change. All of these maps were based on data obtained from various censuses taken from 1869 up to 2011 at different time intervals. The administrative division of Transylvania was also taken into account.
