SOURCE POTENTIAL OF THE MENILITE FORMATION IN THE CENTRAL CARPATHIAN SYNCLINORIUM (OUTER CARPATHIANS, POLAND)
Abstract
This study focuses on the source potential distribution within the Menilite Beds (Oligocene) in the Central Carpathian Synclinorium (Silesian Nappe) in the eastern part of the Polish Outer Carpathians. This region of the Polish Carpathians is one of the oldest petroleum-producing regions in the world, where in several folds plenty of oil and gas fields were discovered. The Menilite series contain the best source rocks in the Carpathians: the Menilite Shales, in which the liptynite group with humic components is a predominant type of organic matter. For estimation of the Source Potential Index (SPI) and пїЅhot shaleпїЅ intervals in the Menilite Formation, results of geochemical analyses of 92 samples from 4 boreholes and petrophysical well logs (TOC content, mineral composition and brittleness index) from 15 well sections were used. Analysis of the Menilite Beds source potential is a key element in reconstruction of the petroleum system models in the Polish Carpathians, since the Menilite Formation is considered to be a potential object for unconventional hydrocarbon exploration.
