TOURIST VALORIZATION OF SPELEOLOGICAL HERITAGE IN KOSOVO
Abstract
Abstract This study examines the tourist valorization of speleological heritage in the Republic of Kosovo. Owing to its geological, geomorphological, hydrological, cultural-historical, and biological heritage, as well as favorable climatic conditions, Kosovo possesses significant potential for the development of speleotourism, ecotourism, and tourism more broadly. In recent years, ecotourism has gained increasing importance within the tourism sector and is widely regarded as a key component of sustainable development. From this perspective, speleological heritage represents a valuable resource that may be developed into a major ecotourism attraction in Kosovo, attracting both domestic and international visitors. The primary objective of this research is to conduct a quantitative analysis and spatial mapping of Kosovo’s tourism potential for the sustainable development of speleotourism based on its speleological assets. The study applies a contemporary analytical methodology derived from geography, tourism studies, and speleology, employing a multi-criteria Geographic Information System (GIS) approach. Nine spatial indicators were incorporated into the analysis. Speleological sites with the highest tourism potential, as well as the factors influencing increases or decreases in tourism activity, were evaluated using GIS-based spatial modeling. The methodological framework integrates network analysis and GRID-based logic as a multi-criteria decision-making technique, thereby enhancing the precision and reliability of the results. The findings indicate that Kosovo’s speleotourism resources - including natural monuments such as biomonuments, hydromonuments, and geomonuments, many of which remain underutilized - offer strong potential for development as a sustainable tourism destination characterized by ecological integrity. The speleotourism sustainability map, produced using GIS and the KRIGING interpolation method at a scale of 1:25, 000, provides a practical foundation for planning and sustainable development initiatives. The results are particularly relevant for national and local institutions responsible for cave protection and management, tourism agencies, and local communities as key stakeholders. Furthermore, this research, representing a novel methodological approach in Kosovo, may serve as a model for the identification and evaluation of additional speleological areas in the country.
