AGEING CYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE: PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES

Abstract

The article focusses on ageing cycling infrastructure and issues of sustainability from the perspective of pavement management system and economic implications. Light cycling paths pavements are well suited to bear non-motorised traffic without suffering plastic deformations. Given that draining is maintained and adjacent vegetation is regularly cut, these pavements can perform well for very long periods. That said, the pavements still succumb to climatic effects acting on the pavement?s surfacing. Chemical properties of the surfacing start to deteriorate the moment the new wearing course is laid. Bitumen binder loses oils due to oxidation which opens the pavement to air, water and chemical contaminants. Even without traffic load, cracks appear and progress into alligator cracking and potholing, and finally disintegration of the pavement when no action is taken by the administrator. This article explores: How fast this effects initiate and develop, what actions can be taken and most importantly, how different maintenance standards impact capital costs requirements and provide economic benefits to cycling infrastructure users? Described methods are applied and explained on a case study comparing two different wearing courses and maintenance standards.
