Abstract

The cone heater is one of the primary sources of radiant heat in the field of fire protection. It is increasingly used not only for measurements related to building materials but also for other flammable objects, that may be exposed to heat radiation during their lifetime or during a fire. Such measurements are more specific in the case of electric cables. They can be exposed to heat individually or in bundles. Their positioning may be in the horizontal or vertical direction, with the latter prevails in real-life conditions. The submitted paper deals with the initiation characteristics of a separate, vertically oriented electric cable. The three initiator source positions were compared: above the sample, at the upper edge of the sample and at the center of the sample. In all positions, 11 samples were tested, one at each heat flow. The heat flow density ranged from 35 kW.m-2 to 85 kW.m-2 with a 5 kW.m-2 increment. The critical heat flux value was calculated from the obtained data of the time to sample ignition. The results show that for the given test method the initiator position has no significant impact, but as the most easily ignitable option appears to be the variant with a spark initiation at the top edge of the sample.
