Abstract

Monitoring short temporal changes in intra-urban vegetation areas will become very important as the proportion of urban areas continue to increase. Intra-urban variations in vegetation abundance influence environmental conditions by selective reflection and absorption of solar radiation and by sequestration of pollutants. This research investigates the hypothesis that it should be possible to use easily accessible multispectral Landsat 8 images to track intra-urban vegetation, and obtaining sufficient quality information about short temporal changes, in the town of Zagreb (Croatia). In situ measurements have not been performed. The article presents only the results of remote sensing methods based on multi-temporal Landsat 8 satellite imagery. These results are the following vegetation indices: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Green-Red Vegetation Index (GRVI) and Ratio Vegetation Index (RVI), calculated on the basis of the channels of the mentioned satellite system. The conditions of vegetation have been observed in three seasons: spring (April), summer (August) and autumn (October) in 2016 and 2017. In the focus area there is mostly deciduous vegetation (forest), which is why the conditions of vegetation have not been observed in winter months. The values of vegetation indices were used to extract information on changes in vegetation and this analysis are represented in this article. Further studies should include foresters in order to make a more meaningful interpretation of the results.
