Abstract

Main aim of this study is characterization of environmental contamination in surrounding of abandoned Sb-deposits in Slovakia by toxic elements as result of longtime mining activity. Main scientific interest is focused on migration of toxic elements in soil profile, their sources and bindings on Fe-oxyhydroxides or other natural sorbents, possibility of input to aquatic systems in studied localities. Results of chemical analyses of soil samples showed large-scale contamination of soil profiles in studied localities. Especially the high level of As and Sb is the main problem in investigated areas. Extremely high concentrations of As and Sb were observed in fluvial soils surrounding of Sb-deposits. Determined high levels of As and Sb are related to recent contamination by long-time outflow from adits and related to the weathering of waste dump materials and to occurrence of ochre layer. Results of sequential extraction experiment are important for bioavailability assessment focused on As and Sb.
