Abstract

The Tourism Resort Praid is one of the most dynamic resorts in Harghita County, Romania. In 2006, the settlement was given the title of resort. Since 2006 the resort started an accelerated development and is being affected by a series of new and old geographic risk factors. To determine these risk factors we used the direct observation method, quantitative and qualitative analysis, GIS analysis and representation, and cartographic method. Among these risk factors we will enumerate some natural risk factors like extreme weather conditions, torrential downpours, flash-floods, strong winds, droughts, wildfires, hailstorms or the damage caused by the wildlife (deer, wild-boars, bears, foxes). Landslides and mass processes which represent a medium risk factor for the houses on the Salt Mountain, and landslides in the eastern compartments of the resort. Considering the social risk factors after 2005 there is a slight improvement on the demographic side. The technogene risks to which the resort shows vulnerability in the central areas of the resort are researched. The resort is at the juncture of two major roads, presenting all types of traffic, pollution forms and high risk of accidents. The ecological risks involve mostly the surroundings of the Salt Mountain, which is a natural protected area, with several endemic plant species and rare animals. Due to the high number of visitors and the amount of waste left behind, these sensitive ecosystems are exposed to degradation.
