Abstract

The article presents the results of the research carried out in order to evaluate the possibility of using the groundwater of the Raba River basin for human consumption, using an indicator dedicated for groundwater (GQI). For this purpose an existing database that contains the results of analyzes of groundwater samples collected from October to December 2005 from wells (18 samples) or springs (21 samples) located in the Raba River basin was used. Samples were taken by one person according to the procedure described in international standards [1-4]. The pH value was measured in the field. The analysis in the laboratory included determination of total hardness, TDS and ions: Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, Fe, Mn, and F-. Chemical analyzes were verified by calculation of errors based on the ionic balance. GQI was calculated taking into account groundwater requirements for human consumption, established by World Health Organization [5], for 13 components: pH, TDS, total hardness, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, Fe, Mn and F-. Based on the calculated indicators for 39 groundwater samples, the water of the Raba River basin was found to be mostly fit for consumption because this water has excellent (32 samples) and good class (3 samples). One sample was classified to poor class and the other 3 samples were unfit for human consumption.
