Abstract

Connected to the vision of bringing space closer to human beings, space tourism starts to become a new exciting free-time spending possibility allowing experiencing new unknown courageous activities linked to the possibility of viewing Earth from space. There are various types of space tourism such as orbital, suborbital and lunar ones. At the same time a big provocation for space tourists is to feel weightlessness and floating in space as the unique chance to contribute in a personal manner to advance science. As humanity is confronted with several global challenges, their complexity based on their interconnectedness, and on fast changes in technological fields, these have brought new attention to space tourism. Some space activities with touristic goals have already been carried out as in April 2001 by the American engineer Dennis Tito, becoming first ever space tourist. Anyway, newer developments are directed at bringing private astronauts to the International Space Station, ISS. On the other side developing suborbital space tourism vehicles is currently in special attention, especially by aerospace companies such as Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic. SpaceX announced 2018 that is planning on sending space tourists, including Yusaku Maezawa, the first Japanese civilian visiting in December 2021 the ISS. The more, the -dearMoon- project represents the first intended private flight around the Moon on the Starship of SpaceX. Thus, technical and operational aspects faced by space flight operators as also potential environmental impact must be debated to ensure sustainable space tourism activities in the future.
