DGNSS NETWORK IN BULGARIA: STATUS AND FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
Since 2000 in Bulgaria have been installed and put into operation two DGPS beacons. Preliminary site selection and equipment delivery procedures for a new station of the same type have been started recently. Each of the two existing and one planned stations serve specific activities: marine and inland water way navigation and exploration, land navigation, positioning, targeting, etc. Though built with different purposes and missing a common network concept, these stations provide differential correction coverage over a part of the national territory good enough to allow for submeter real-time positioning accuracy for mapping and GIS data collection. The existing signal reception conditions are explored and analyzed using radio planning and field surveying methods. Some conclusions are drawn with regard to further development and achievement of nation-wide DGNSS signal coverage.

stations built either on the case-by-case basis, or as a permanent DGNSS network. With two operational and one planned beacons, the territory of the country would eventually be successfully covered east of the 24°E meridian, leaving its western regions partially or totally blank. An additional beacon (e.g. in Sofia or near-by) could be a good opportunity for the mountainous south-western area but would make no use for the remaining territory to north, where signals transmitted by foreign DGNSS stations is more likely to be expected.
