Abstract

The wind energy is a modern and efficient solution that uses the air flow through wind turbines to mechanically power generators for electric power production, being an alternative to burning fossil fuels. Wind power is renewable, widely distributed, produces no greenhouse gas emissions, consumes no water and uses small land areas. A wind turbine converts the kinetic energy of the wind into electrical energy. The electrical power generator and the steel upper structure of a wind turbine are equipments where were implemented the latest state of art technology. The foundation solutions for a wind turbine consist in a large reinforced concrete block that assures a great weight at the level of the base of the wind turbines tower, so that the upper structure will be in equilibrium. The paper will analyse the effect of placing a reduced number of piles below the reinforced concrete foundation block. The presence of these piles will reduce the pressure transmitted by the soil to the foundation base and will assure a better equilibrium of the foundation and of the superstructure. Also, the presence of piles will have the aim of reducing the dimensions of the foundation. The reduction of the dimensions of the foundations will lead to an important reduction in the consumption of steel and concrete quantities.
