Abstract

The application of reactive materials in the form of a Deep Permeable Reactive Barrier during and after coal conversion constitutes an innovative concept of protecting the environment from georeactor influence. The reactive materials filling the post-process cavern will make it possible to remove or immobilise the gaseous and liquid contaminants that may be subject to leaching, while also reinforcing rock mass stability. The article pays particular attention to the technical and legal possibilities for reactive material utilisation in barriers located in the rock mass with regard to conditions found in Poland. Barrier construction methods were discussed, as well as the factors influencing their operation, including the costs and efficiency (durability) of the utilised method. Among the key aspects of correct and efficient technology design and possible malfunction prevention are proper siting, understanding groundwater flow conditions as well as numerical modelling of groundwater flow and contaminant transport. Taking into account the interactions between the solution and the reactive materials forming the barrier is a primary requirement for the analysis of phenomena occurring within the reactive barrier. Considering reactions such as precipitation and dissolution, ion exchange or surface complexation enables the identification of processes that are the most significant in terms of purging the plume of contaminants of individual substances. This in turn makes it possible to limit the spectrum of materials used for experiment conduction and barrier construction.
