ADAPTIVE REUSE OF MONUMENTAL BUILDINGS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Abstract
The concept of “sustainability” was developed in recent years in order to make decisions under the consideration of environment. Additionally, “environmental sustainability” means the ensuring of the continuity of the natural resources most of which faced with exhaustion with the increasing population and developing technology on the world. Increasing both adaptive reuse applications and the use of alternating materials will support the protection of natural resources and provide efficiency in terms of energy and natural resources. The sustainability in architecture is the belief of;  Economic use of resources (reduction, reuse and recycle),  Life cycle (the ability of analysis of the sustainability period and its effects on the environment) and  A human-integrated design (covers the strategies questioning the relations between humans and natural environment). In this context, when the monumental buildings are taken into consideration in terms of sustainability, the fact of “not giving any concession against the opportunities of meeting future generations’ needs by using both today’s needs and the opportunities provided by the past generations” comes into existence. Instead of reconstructing, using the existing buildings by adapting them to new functions will provide economy in terms of energy, manpower, material and money. Today, the optimum uses of limited resources, the adaptive reuse of monumental buildings in terms of economic benefit have great importance. However, the harmful effect of the construction sector on the natural environment will decrease by not constructing new buildings but using the existing ones. In that way, the life quality and sustainability of the monumental buildings will be provided, i.e. their physical deterioration and out-of-use possibilities will be prevented. During the transfer of our cultural-architectural products to the future generations, there will be provided many social, economic and cultural benefits for the society due to reusing the existing resources and making people feel the social responsibility. The protection of buildings before getting destroyed is a component of sustainability in terms of energy and material conservation. Adaptive reuse is a tool for protecting monumental buildings from demolition which will support the formation of the “sustainable environment”.
