Abstract

Natural resource management in the North of Russia has a centuries-long history which reflects the peculiarities of northern territory development. The specific character of natural resource management in the Arctic zone as well as in the North depends on cer-tain natural and social-economic conditions, limiting factors and environmental protec-tion measures. The Fennoscandia Green Belt is an international cross-border project. The primary goal of the ecological corridor is to provide sustainable use of natural resources in the unique undisturbed areas of the border territories of Finland, Nordic countries, the Kola Penin-sula and Karelia. The article is aimed to carry out a comparative geographical analysis of natural resource management in the Russian part of the Fennoscandia Green Belt and in constituent enti-ties of the western sector of Russian Arctic. Special circumstances of the geographical location, peculiarities of nature and resource potential and its use in the Republic of Ka-relia, Arkhangelsk region and Murmansk region are covered in the article. This area boasts considerable industrial and at the same time tourism and recreational potential, which provides the basis for environmental protection, eco-tourism development and local employment. The article also represents the issue concerning the possibility of the Fennoscandia Green Belt extension to constituent entities of the western sector of Russian Arctic. The Green Belt can be seen as the united social, ecological and economic area of the Barents region, where northern nature preservation harmonizes with historical and cultural backgrounds of the local people and is in line with economic development objectives of constituent entities and their municipalities
