Abstract

A comprehensive review of published books and articles shows that discontinuities, especially joints within coal-bearing depos its are important features that must be considered during mine planning and desi gn. Less attention has been paid to orientations of joint sets and other disc ontinuities relative to mining face in proposed rock mass classification systems. In fact the structural competence of mine roof rock is determined primarily by the discontinuities that weaken the rock fabric. In this paper the effect of joint characteristics including sp acing, persistence, strike and dips was considered on roof rock behavior. By regard ing to the conditions of East Alborz coal mines, shahrood, Iran have been proposed a new classification system. The obtained results of this method show that this pa rameter has the most significant effect on the roof stability in coal mines. Key words: Discontinuities, Roof rock behavior, Coal mine, East Alborz coal field.
