Abstract

The paper deals with issue of computation of the sunrays penetration through point cloud data with considering the geometrical and astronomical principles in calculating the Sun position relative to points of the objects on the Earth surface. Input data are represented by point cloud obtained by the method of terrestrial laser scanning and they express group of trees in the forest stand, where solar insolation is one of important parameters being studied in forest protection management systems. Currently used methods of solar insolation computation are based mainly on vector data represented by isosurfaces or raster data representing a digital elevation model. Our solution is focused on detailed point cloud data that express the complex objects such are real trees. We propose to convert input point cloud data into the form of regular 3D grid based on voxels. The result of the paper is also methodology for sunlight analysis with comprehensive steps of computation including transformation between the coordinate reference system of point cloud data and the local coordinate system of 3D raster grid, as well as transformation of the Sun coordinates in the equatorial coordinate system to the horizontal coordinates azimuth and altitude (elevation) and following transformation into the local coordinate system of 3D raster grid.
