STRENGTHENING OF THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE WITH A THIN REINFORCED CEMENT CONCRETE SLAB
Abstract
Repairs of cement concrete pavements are among the most demanding technological operations in road construction and therefore require increased attention. Repairs of less damaged cement concrete pavements are usually made using plastic mortars, epoxy and polyester resins or special materials. The economics of the repair, or the strengthening of damaged cement concrete pavements, is tied to the technical and technological problems of interaction with asphalt layers. Thin reinforced cement concrete slab is a method of strengthening and repairing damaged cement concrete pavements. The main function of the reinforcing in the TEVYCED (Thin Reinforced Cement Concrete Slab) cover is to prevent or significantly limit the copying of joints and cracks from the base of the pavement structure, to participate in extending the lengths of the slabs - to prevent shrinkage cracks, to limit the expanded and opening of possible cracks and to partially increase the load-bearing capacity if the reinforcement is placed in the tensile part of the cross-section. After extensive research and experimental sections in situ, the new plain slab was gradually replaced by a slab with steel reinforcement. The reason was the possibility of significantly reducing the thickness of the new slab by up to 45 % while reinforcing 0.2 to 0.5 % of the slab cross-section. The thin reinforced slab technology was developed as a construction type used exclusively in the reconstruction of existing airport surfaces. The article focuses on some aspects of the problems of repairing cement concrete pavements by reinforcement, which is resorted to when the surface defects of the slabs are very extensive, or when it is necessary to increase the operational performance of the pavement.
