Abstract

Disturbed areas show in a most emphatic way the adverse impacts of man's production activity and damage to nature. At the same time, the conflict between economic and environmental considerations is unavoidable. The disturbed area in Bulgaria by 2017 is 104 960 ha. While some of the disturbances in a part of it (abandoned industrial sites and areas) are mostly passive (mainly related to land use change as a consequence of soil sealing), those related to energy and mining/coal mining that are still under operation cause ecosystem and landscape disturbance on significant areas and considerably restrict the ecosystem services in their adjacent territories. Such an example is the 14 500 ha disturbed in the process of open coal mining in Radnevo municipality agricultural land. Estimation and prognosis of the anthropogenic impacts on the quality of the living environment and the state of the urban - and agroecosystems in the region of ?Maritsa Iztok? TPP (Thermal Power Plant) and the existing mines were made by assessment of soil carbon sequestration - an ecosystem service that the agricultural land provides. Both the current state and two future scenarios for the future development of the coal mining concession from the ?Maritsa Iztok? Coal Basin were examined. The purpose of the study is to give a more detailed understanding of the threats that this important energy object generates and to reveal the opportunities to limit biodiversity and ecosystem services loss.
