THE SLIP SURFACE LOCATIONS OF DEEP BLOCK LANDSLIDES
Abstract
The identification of the landslide preparation and development mechanisms is the key to the sustainable development of landslide and landslide-prone urban and mining areas. The understanding of the landslide preparation mechanism is necessary for landslide hazard and risk assessments and designing proper protection measures and monitoring. A new equation for calculation of a slip surface depth (of a landslide basis) was obtained, using slope morphological and soil strength parameters. A new elaborated approach for identification of critical states of native soil masses during the preparation of a landslide on natural and man-made slopes [3] is considered. The cases were considered with the landslide basis located below the toe of the slope (below the erosion basis) and when the slip surface comes out on the slope (so-called "hanging" landslides). The results of calculations were compared with the monitoring data (inclinometric), showing a good agreement. For example, the calculated depths of slip surfaces for deep landslide sites in Moscow coincide with depths identified by inclinometer measurements with accuracy of 1 m. The same results were obtained for the slope of Sura River with a «hanging» landslide. The elaborated equation can be implemented for deep block landslides, occurring in different engineering geological conditions, from weak soils (such as loams) to rocks (calcareous clays, limestone, etc.).
