Abstract

The elimination of finely emulsified oil from waste waters is an important problem, and so far, no satisfactory solution thereto is available worldwide. Here we report some of the results from our studies on the purification of water from different types of oil, to allow waste water re-use in the technological cycle, or use for agricultural irrigation. The isolation of oil is performed by treatment of waste water with polymers of specific adsorption behaviour and solubilizing properties in aqueous medium. Multiblock co-polymers of ethylene and propylene oxides, modified oligoamides, and cross-linked poly-acrylic acid with polyethylene oxide grafts were investigated. It was established that the studied co-polymers significantly decreased oil content in water, and the highest level of water purification (more than 85\%) was achieved with the modified oligoamide treatment. On the grounds of these results, a technology for the purification of waste water from finely emulsified oils is being developed.
