Abstract

The purpose of creating National Parks is to restore the proper state of nature in a given area. An attempt to recreate distorted landscape values is a long, arduous and expensive process. Part of the Parks? operating costs is covered from admission fees for tourists to enter their areas. However, to prevent negative impacts of visitors on the natural environment, visiting National Parks is subject to particular restrictions. Tourist traffic is carried out only according to specific rules resulting from legal provisions. Annually the beauty of nature attracts huge numbers of tourists, which significantly affects economic profit. But, on the other hand, it also results in the increase of ecological threats. Devastation, noise, pollution, waste are permanent conflicts between human activity and nature. In order to meet the arising problems, various projects are implemented to improve public awareness, reduce devastation and promoting ecology. The authors present a model of social awareness assessment in the field of ecological attitudes. This model was developed for the needs of coal mining, but its universality allowed it to be used to assess environmental awareness in the national park. The article discusses the basic assumptions of the project and presents an example of its practical application in one of the largest national parks in Poland. The basis of the analysis was data on the amount of waste exported from the National Parks over the last 5 years. A very important element of the publication is the assessment of the ecological effects of the activities carried out. The authors hope that the presented material will be a voice in the discussion regarding undertaking small actions that can bring very large effects in the field of environmental protection.
