STUDY OF THE CYTOTOXIC AND GENOTOXIC EFFECT OF URTICA DIOICA EXTRACT
Abstract
Urtica dioica is a species of the Urticaceae family and the curative properties of this plant have been known since antiquity. Our study aimed to determine whether, in various concentrations and at different action times, the natural extract of Urtica dioica has positive, negative or neutral effects on mitotic cell division. For the proposed study, we used the standard Allium test and tested concentrations of 25%, 50% and 100% of the extract obtained, at action times of 6 and 24 hours. From the results obtained for the mitotic index, it is observed that it decreases compared to the value obtained for the control variant, with one exception: in the treatment with a concentration of 100%, for a 24-hour action time. This demonstrates that over a long period of time, Urtica dioica extract has a positive effect, stimulating the processes of cell division. The weakest cytotoxic effect in the case of the Urtica dioica extract during the 6-hour treatment is 25% concentration. In the case of the treatment duration of 24 hours, the weakest cytotoxic effect was observed at the 100% concentration. In the analysed microscopic fields, a stimulating effect on cell divisions could be observed, which however stop in prophase, but also a mitoinhibitory effect for most concentrations, a mitostatic action regardless of the time of action. This justifies us to suggest their use for therapeutic purposes in higher dilutions than those tested, over a long period of action.
