Abstract

Apart form main product output, the side products having the second raw materials and industry wastes status are being created in metallurgy plant technological process. Dust outlets, waste gases, technological liquids and particularly slags represent main metallurgy industry wastes. Metallurgy plant with closed production cycle and annual capacity of 5 millions tons of steel yearly produces about 1 million tons of blast furnace slag, 0.5 million tons of steelmaking slag and 0.05 million ton of secondary metallurgy slag. Whereby metallurgical slag represents about 80% of side products originated in pig iron and steel production. According to law valid for waste management the waste producer is obligated to ensure their di sposal without any negative impact on environment. This contribution deals with possibilities of blast furnace, oxygen converters and electric arc furnace slags utilization since their occurrence is major and chemical composition is stable what predetermined them for effective recycling procedure. Metallurgical slags in form of gravel have been used as concrete filling charge instead of natural gravel. Slag gravel does not cont ain undesirable substances like clay, silicate slate and organic impurities, it has uniform mineralogical co mposition and a lot of fine voids what provides for good bound with cement, it quickly takes primary strength and high strength after hardening. Semi-operationa l trials of concrete production for three different types of metallurgical slags were carried out at Department of Ferrous Metallurgy and Foundry under conditions available. Final strength properties of mixtures from metallurgical slags were compared with standardized values for road concrete, i.e. the highest quality concrete.
