GEOECOLOGICAL MONITORING OF THE SEA OF AZOV COASTLINE (ROSTOV REGION)

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify geoecological hazard caused by natural and human-induced processes at the Azov seashore within the Rostov region. The data for the last 90 years about changes in the coast features of the Sea of Azov were examined in this paper. To assess the extent of the risk of the seashore destruction geographical and ecological techniques have been applied: laboratory and field work at the collection, analysis, and estimation of coast features, measurements of marine erosion rate, comparison of cartographic documents with GIS data and satellite images. The article contains a description of geology aspects of the coastline, geologic and lithologic description of the coastal cliffs, analysis of wearing away of the sea coasts in dynamics. The results of monitoring of the coastal processes have revealed some new trends in the development of hazardous natural and human-induced processes for different types of shores of the Gulf of Taganrog. It has allowed us to work out quantitative criteria for geo-environmental risk assessment and carrying out the coastal zoning. The obtained data can be used for designing a development agenda of the coastal zone in the region.
