Abstract

All over the world, including Latvia, terrorism, warfare and other threats are on the increase, and risk prevention and minimization of the consequences of these events are associated with civil protection actualization and developing the competence necessary for that. This state of events is recognized through the replacement of the former Civil Protection Law with the Civil Protection and Disaster Management Law, proclaimed in 2016. The aim of the study was to evaluate the dynamics of the students` competence in the civil protection study process at the Latvia University of Agriculture. The methodological basis of the study included studies, analyses and evaluation of relevant publications in the context of competence and civil protection. A questionnaire was used to assess the development of studentsпїЅ competence in the civil protection studies. The data for the study were obtained from 87 Bachelor`s studies respondents who had started the civil protection learning at the Latvia University of Agriculture on the first semester of the 2016/2017 study year, as prescribed by the Civil Protection and Disaster Management Law. Within the framework of the study and as a result of improved civil protection studies there was significant development of students` competence in the field of civil protection. In all courses, self-assessment of study results (knowledge, skills and competence) showed higher at the end of the semester than at the beginning.
