Abstract

With developing industries particularly dying industries and complication in the structure of dye molecules and resulting wastewaters from these plants cause a serious threat to the environment (due to resistance to biological treatment). The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of coupled system (UV/ZnO+SnO2) in the removal of acid yellow 23 (AY23) a mono-azo dye from aqueous solutions. In these experiments ZnO and SnO2 were employed in a single and coupled form in slurry conditions and the optimum condition was determined for removal of the dye. In each run the concentration of AY23 was 40 mg/l using low pressure mercury lamp (30 W). The optimum amount of ZnO was 900 mg/l. The coupled suspension was prepared using ZnO and SnO2 with concentrations of 700 mg/l and 200 mg/l respectively. The results revealed that coupled system was more effective than single one and the best removal was achieved in the ratio of 7:2 (ZnO : SnO2). The decolorization of 84.3\% occurred with coupled system (700:200) mg/l after 20 min of irradiation where as 78.2\% decolorization was achieved with single ZnO (900 mg/l) at the same reaction time.
