Abstract

This paper has been accomplished in the framework of Diminish Project (LIFE03 ENV/ RO/000539) within the Life Environment Program. In accord with the Water Framework Directive the nutrient management is a decisive factor for increase the water quality. In this respect the Diminish on-line system, based on GIS database and modeling approach and using Open-GIS technology, allows diminishing uncertainties related to basin management. The Bistrita River (283 km length, 7039 km2) had proven to be specifically sensitive to human activities, being one of the main tributaries of the Siret River, which is an important affluent of the Danube River. The database structure has been planned for the study, evaluation and management of information, as well as for the assessment of damages occurred by pollution effects. The dedicated GIS database concerns different type and category of information related to meteorological, hydrological and hydro-geological data, pollution sources, water quality data, administrative boundaries, monetary valuation of environmental costs, outputs of mathematical models. The thematic layers have been extracted from the classical mapping support, recent satellite images (e.g. the hydrographic network, land cover/land use) or by field measurements (portable spectrophotometer multi-parameter and GPS technology).
