Abstract

Industrial history of many places still interacts with the present time. Ostrava (Czech Republic) as former industrial city is a typical example of problems and barriers which can be found in process of regeneration, revitalization or redevelopment of areas used formerly for heavy industry. The article is focused on retrospective description of development of areas which can be known as backfields or mega sites. The article will be focused on five areas for which there are expectations and likely huge potential for future пїЅ majority for a new industrial use. But still they are abandoned or without any production in place. In fact these problematic areas represent more than 150 hectares and had in the past or still have significant problems with contamination. Basic description of history and future expectations of these sites will be mentioned in the article. The text will further continue with the description and evaluation of potential use by application of the EFE-Brown assessment model. We sought key factors which lead to the situation, when even after twenty years, there is still rather big part of built up area of the city without any clear future vision for redevelopment. In the analysis authors will also comment the interaction between the old and the new master plan of Ostrava. The summary will name barriers which can lead to problems with the future of these sites.
