A METHOD FOR ESTIMATING THE CAPACITY OF THE BUFFER MEMORY OF A ROUTER IN THE PRIORITY MANAGEMENT OF HETEROGENEOUS TRAFFIC WITH ARBITRARY DISTRIBUTION OF PACKET LENGTHS
Abstract
Building a telecommunications system based on routers allows you to use traffic prioritization to improve the quality of user traffic, regardless of network technology. This new feature, compared to networks built entirely on hubs, is a consequence of the fact that routers buffer packets before they are sent to another port. The router usually leads for each input and output port not one but several queues, each queue having its own processing priority. The efficiency of the network depends on the capacity of the internal buffer memory of the router, which is necessary for temporary storage of packets in cases where they can not be immediately transferred to the output port. To prevent packet loss during a brief multiple exceeding of the average traffic intensity, the only tool is the buffer of the corresponding capacity. Therefore, when designing a network router, it is important to determine the capacity of its internal buffer memory, in which the probability of its overflow is within the specified limits. The thesis proposes a method for estimating the buffer memory capacity when using the priority traffic management mechanism, based on a discipline with mixed priorities.
