Abstract

Faults can act both as seal and as pathways for fluid migration and therefore correct evaluation of fault zone properties is one of key element for conventional hydrocarbon reservoir management. Nevertheless, the unconventional plays deformed by faults became increasingly in demand for petroleum industry. Lower Paleozoic sediments in central part of Baltic Basin are considered as potential unconventional shale gas system. Key TOC-rich intervals in the area of interest are Caradoc Sasino Formation and Lower Llandovery Jantar bituminous shale Member. Middle Cambrian mudstones and sandstones can be considered as a conventional reservoir. This prompted the author to carry out the fault seal analysis. Based on 3D seismic and well log data obtained from 6 wells 3D geological models were built. In the area of interest 51 faults were mapped within the area of 120 km2. Such complexity enforced using various 3D modeling techniques. Structural Framework Modeling (SFM) and Structural Gridding Modeling (SGM) methods were used for reproducing fault properties as closely as possible. Detailed evaluation of fault zone properties was possible with use of Petrel and Move software. 3D lithological model and shale content model were built. Spatial distribution of fault throw was modeled. Uncertainty in stratigraphic variation and Shale Gouge Ratio (SGR) fault seal prediction algorithm was investigated using triangle diagrams. Spatial analysis of those parameters was done also on Allan diagrams. Stratigraphic juxtaposition analysis revealed contact of TOC-reach shale formations with Middle Cambrian mudstones and sandstones and therefore possibility of hydrocarbon migration through the faults.
