GEOTECHNICAL GROUNDWATER PROTECTION SYSTEM
Abstract
Protection of groundwater against pollution is an important part of maintaining sustainable development. In addition to the impact of the anthropogenic activity, groundwater resources may be exposed to many different kinds of pollution e.g. during floods. In such areas, knowledge about spreading mechanism of pollutants can contribute to choose appropriate preventive protection e.g. hydrogeological, hydraulic, geotechnical or other different measures. The presented problem can be solved by finite element method in a horizontal plane. In a permeable environment, the spread of pollution mainly depends on the groundwater filtration rate. Solving of such problem is the accumulation of two different tasks. In the case of continuous pollution should be used stationary model to determine groundwater filtration rates and transient filtration model in the case of accidental pollution. Paper deals with a geotechnical groundwater protection measure against pollution - the cut-off walls. In the paper is analysed influence of the cut-off wall shape upon reduction of continual and short-time (accidental) pollution. Cut-off walls can be advantageously applied on reachable low permeable or impermeable subsoil and are economical, especially on continuous and repeated accidental pollution where pumping systems would be extremely energy intensive.
