Abstract

The paper describes the use of methods of visualization and non-destructive investigation of spatial distribution of changes in the structure of the monitored material, which was a cement composite with admixture of blast furnace slag. The test specimens in the shape of the cylinders with a diameter of 24mm and a height of 25mm were placed in an aggressive sulfate environment represented by bacteria of the microorganism Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans for 6 months. To investigate the spatial distribution and the degree of degradation of the affected area, the X-ray computed tomography (CT) method by Nikon XT H 225 ST industrial X-ray system scanner was used. The results were analyzed by VG Studio Max 3.2 software. Comparing the reference 3D images before and after the degradation tests has shown an aggressive microbacterial environment. The visible corrosion of the cement filling reaches a depth of approx. 3.5mm. At the same time, image analysis showed a remarkable transfer of material from the corrosion area to the outer and inner free surfaces of the sample. The precipitated material on the surfaces partially increased the geometric dimensions of the sample and caused partial ingrown of the communicative pores in the concete specimens. The analysis of the change in the density distribution of the material shows the ingrown of some pores in the material and indicates a change in the representation of individual density phases. This demonstrates the corrosion degradation of the material composition.
