Abstract

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) represents a high fluid homogeneous mixture, able to fill perfectly the formwork without any external mechanical action due to the flow capacity under its own weigh. The productions of SCC demands new mix design procedure, with different constituent dosage using similar components as vibrated concrete. It contains a larger amount of powder, which allows the use of industrial by-products such as limestone filler, fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, silica fumes and others. The use of the waste, the elimination of vibration and the reduction of noise pollution provide SCC as an environmental-friendly concrete or ?green concrete?. The properties of the fresh mixture were thoroughly studied, but the changes made to its composition inevitably result in adjustments of the properties of the hardened material. The performance of SCC involves improved microstructure, increased density, higher strength and also enhanced durability. The design of structures in seismic areas requires not only proper mechanical strengths for structural elements but also the provision of the post elastic deformation capacity in the critical areas, according to the overall ductility considered in the structure design. The seismic action of a structural system can be accomplished in two ways: through a high capacity of post elastic deformation, which involves relatively small resistances of structural elements or a high resistance capacity with low incursions in the post peak range. The aims of this study are to investigate the mechanical properties and the behaviour in the post elastic domain of SCC containing limestone filler.
