Abstract

Analysis of forestry fund and especially of the silvicultural fund represents more and more a multidisciplinary subject, interesting for the purely theoretical sciences and also for the sciences with wide practical application. One of the characteristics that generate interest is the spatial-temporal ?mobility? of forests, and also the possibility of satellite approach, by means and methods specific to remote sensing. The area of interest, a case study in this paperwork, is extended from the mountain region to the hills, in Timi? County, Romania, an area that was marked by mining exploitations and ?forced? transformations during the communist regime in order to increase the agricultural potential. Under these circumstances, the limit of the forestry fund has suffered spatial and temporal changes as well. Relying on this, the major objective of this study is represented by the analysis of changes occurred in forest areas, practically the reduction of grasslands (a category of utilization positioned at forest side), in the situation of usually uncontrolled afforestation, or deforestations, accidental and/or intentioned, leading to the apparition of ?pseudo-grasslands?. The analysis of changes will rely on satellite images purchased at a distance of about 30 years, in GIS field. Successive to the geo-spatial analyses, we may obtain a series of differentiations of forest bodies limits, spatially located, and in the same time, it is possible to quantify their surface. The causes and effects of deforestations and afforestations are multiple and different from one sub-area to another. The results of spatial analyses sketch the assembly image of the area of interest, and also offer the possibility to reuse, in impact studies, the analysis of risks or other types of researches that have as objective the management of that area.
