Abstract

Digitization and publication of old globes on the Internet allows the public a detailed inspection of globes that are normally encountered only in a limited way. In the collections of memory institutions two forms of globes can be found. In the first case there are the classic spherical globes placed in decorative stands. In the second case the globes are stored as a set of globe prints. Such globe prints usually consist of a series of globe gores and two polar caps. This paper deals with the issue of creating digital 3D models of globes from the raster images of globe prints. The effort is to introduce the globes that have survived only in form of globe prints and enable its conversion into a spherical shape. Last but not least, an important benefit of this work is to make created digital models publicly available. For digital data acquisition was used an accurate cartometric scanner of A0+ format with resolution 800 dpi. Because the exact projection background of globe prints is not known, it is necessary to determine the cartographic projection used for the construction of gores and polar caps. After determining the correct projection the scanned globe prints are processed in specialized software that was created for this purpose. The last step in the whole process of digitization is to expose the final digital models of globes on the Internet.
