Abstract

Static electricity as a result of friction and induction loading mechanisms is a phenomenon that occurs frequently in the industry, most of the time accidentally and unwanted. The electrostatic charges accumulated by workers during various activities may lead to electrostatic discharges, which, in the presence of an explosive atmosphere, cause explosion and / or fire risk. Theoretical and practical studies regarding the occurrence, formation and accumulation of electrostatic charges in the charging process with electrostatic charges of workers during carried out the activity in potentially explosive atmospheres, as well as the many events, explosions generated by the ignition of explosive atmospheres by electrostatic discharges from person, highlights the need to assess the risk of charging with electrostatic charges and, consequently, the risk of explosion at each workplace. The assessment of these two risks aims at identifying the technical and organizational solutions to be applied to eliminate or at least reduce to an acceptable level the risk generated by electrostatic charging of workers in the presence of potentially explosive atmospheres to ensure security and health at work at a level as high as possible. The need to ensure the highest possible level of protection in industrial spaces with danger of explosive atmospheres implies the avoidance of formation, accumulation and discharge of electrostatic charges that may be generated on the body or clothing of workers during carried out the activities in areas with potentially explosive atmosphere. The paper presents the results of some case studies carried out, being highlighted some aspects that should be taken into consideration when assessing the risk of electrostatic charging with electrostatic charges of workers in Ex areas, in order to avoid undesirable events that often involve important material damage and losses of human lives.
