THE HISTORY OF MINING AND RECLAMATION AND FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH NEW ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION METHODS IN NORTH-WESTERN BOHEMIA REGION

Abstract

The North-Western Bohemia region takes a unique position in the history of mining in the Czech Republic. Several ore districts are situated here, the welfare of which influenced the development of the Czech state in some periods. Some precious stones mining was also significant. Today the North-Bohemian Basin area is known for its largest Czech brown coal deposit. Whereas ore mining in the region extinguished and the other raw materials mining has relatively small significance, coal mining and the restoration of damages caused by mining activity still have an essential meaning. Brown coal is mined in four general mining localities which in principle differ in geological terms and partially in the parameters of acquired coal. That requires a little different methodology of exploitation and reclamation. The mines of Vrsany and CSA are currently the principal mining localities owned by Mosteck\'a uheln\'a spolecnost, a.s. (Most Coal Company, j.s.c.) mining company and the mines of B\'\ilina and Libous are owned by Severocesk\'e doly, a.s. (North Bohemian Mines, j.s.c.) mining company. This report briefly summarizes the history and present of ore, non-metallic and coal mining in the region and in detail any new restoration methods, especially the foundation of research areas for natural succession (development) in suitable locations. Natural succession retained areas on B\'\ilina and Libous mines dumps emerge from the philosophy of Severocesk\'e doly mining company locations reclamation. These areas have been founded in places where functional ecosystems began developing spontaneously under specific conditions, where a preservation and research of some biologic geologic and palaeontologic phenomena is needed, and where a future provision of access can be presupposed. The paper evaluates first experience with foundation of areas retained to natural succession in Radovesice dump, Strimice dump, B\'\ilina mine and Libous mine.
