Abstract

In August 2018 an expedition was organized to Lake Sevan (Armenia), where seismoacoustic studies and the selection of short cores of bottom sediments for laboratory investigations were carried out. Five seismoacoustic sections revealed a bedding pattern of bottom sediments. The thickness of sediments reaches ~ 14 m. Laboratory studies included: radiocarbon dating, measuring magnetic susceptibility, measuring coercive parameters, obtaining thermomagnetic diagrams, determining the elemental composition of sediments, as well as palynological studies. According to the dating data, the average sedimentation rate for the upper section was determined as 17 cm/1000 years. Based on the coercive parameters the Day diagram was constructed, which revealed an ensemble of pseudo-single-domain particles in the sediments. A decrease in the content of Br, Si, Ca indicates a cooling of the climate - this change occurs about 1300 years ago. In Lake Sevan sediments the ratio CaO/MgO increases up the section, which indicates a decrease in the salinity. The border at the level of 13-15 cm is marked by an increase/decrease for many elements, which indicates a change in sedimentation conditions.
