Abstract

In 2050 more than 66% of the world?s population will live in urban areas. Some cities feature an extremely high growth rate, dense population and often a low level of management and economic development. Traditional economic theory fails to consider the positive and negative externalities arising from the interaction of economic, ecological and social city spheres. Externalities arise at interaction of economic and ecological, economic and social, and ecological and social components. The choice between environmental and social well-being is a very acute issue now. Circular economy approach can help to find adequate solutions. The authors suppose that an adequate environmental management and development of circular economy is necessary for Russia because it is the unique solution of accumulated environmental, economic and social problems that brings rapid urbanization. The authors use up-to-date scientific and practical tools in order to show how one can make the process of urbanization more sustainable.
